Re: 405 Mi16 Brakes - update

I need some advice:

I've called several places today, hoping to get new pads on the car
tomorrow. The only thing available in stock (Pep Boys) are 1 yr. $14.99
Raybestos pads (their cheapo's). The parts mgr. told me it's not as
important to have really good pads on the rear (?), but I hate to spend the
time & labor to install junkie pads that'll have to be replaced a year from
now. I can get the Raybestos lifetime pads ($38) on Tuesday, but by then I
can probably overnight OEM's. Is it critical to stick with the OEM pads?
Suggestions??

Also, can someone tell me how I can determine if my rotors will need to be
replaced too? I heard a *slight* scraping sound last week from the left
rear brake, but then yesterday it changed to a loud, hollow metal-on-metal
sound. Can I eyeball the rotors & tell by looking? If they need replacing,
is it better to get OEM rotors, or would aftermarket be okay?

BTW - The parts manager at Pep Boys used to race against 505 Turbo's....said
he'd always pass them on turns, but then the turbo's would kick in hard on
the straightaway! Bob Burdett, if you're on the list, he remembers you
flipping your turbo about 8 times!

Thanks, in advance, for anyone who can help me.

VENT: With all the things going wrong with this car lately, if I can find a
do-it-yourself or power puff mechanic course around here, I'm going to take
it! I've put about $1200 in the car since I bought it last summer, and
still have a list of things to repair, despite the fact that the dealer told
me it only needed a clutch & motor mount when I bought it. I'm determined
to hang in there with the car because it's basically sound. The repairs are
just problems that usually happen with an older car, but I get frustrated
when something new pops up every week and I'm not knowledgeable enough to
take care of it myself and it's such a hassle getting parts & a place to fix
it. Enough said.
