You may or may not recall that I too was rear-ended in my 405...in my case, the
bumper cover cracked into two pieces, the crack being at the 90 degree angle
between the side and rear part of the bumper on the driver's side.
Additionally, the trunk floor was slightly buckled when the bumper mount was
shifted up from the impact. To make a long story short, the estimate I got
(using new parts) was $2400 - clearly too high. The other party's insurance co.
quoted the damage at $530. I wrangled with them for the better part of a year
and we finally settled on a figure of $980 for the damage. This was for a used
bumper, used mount, straightening the trunk floor, and painting the bumper (by
the way, after I had the damage repaired, I got my car completely repainted -
it's a good opportunity to do so, since your new bumper might be a different
color from the rest of the car anyway). So that should give you a rough
guideline of what to expect. And don't forget that if they are being a**holes
about this, which they probably will be, you have a stiff neck - don't sign or
fill out anything regarding injuries you may or may not have until you can
ascertain their willingness to be fair.

Subject: Not my month for my 405--accident
If anyone can please help me regarding my 405 I would appreciate it
greatly. It just hasn't been a good month for my Peug. Last month, I
emailed the group about a vandal that had kicked in the passenger side of
my pristine and very-much babied 405. Well, since then, it has been
vandalized once again (2 weeks ago) when some punks threw a bottle at me
while driving the other direction on a highway, leaving me with some nasty
dents, paint scrapes and a cracked windshield. As if that wasn't enough,
I was rear-ended on I-5 in Seattle on Saturday, leaving me with a messed
up rear bumper.
Here's my concern.
I have an appointment with State Farm to have an appraisal done on my car
to what the cost of the repairs will be. Apparently they want to write me
a check tomorrow based on their appraisal and I am not wanting to get
screwed over. Are there any really expensive-to-fix components to the
bumper assembly that the insurance company might look over? From what I
can see, here is the damage...
-bumper twisted--pulled back on left side and pushed in on the right (1")
which the tire seems to rub, along with the inner wheel well (pushed in)
-paint is cracked (crazed) from deflection of bumper upon impact
-plastic with chrome strip is loose on the passenger side and sticking out
-bumper brackets underneath are bent (right stretched and left compressed)
I think the impact must have been at about 10-15 mph, which left me with a
very stiff and sore neck, but with a car that looks to have handelled it
very remarkably. Any advise would be appreciated. I am also curious if
the insurance company is required to provide me with a rental car while my
car is in the shop. Also, I am thinking of having the entire car fixed up
and repainted--any thoughts on whether I should be able to get a better
deal since some work is already being done?
Thanks,
