Automatic Shift Level Loose

I've got a 'loose' shift lever on my '86 505GL automatic. It's not the
small set-screw just under the cover, which I've tightened before. It
seems that the entire lever has some 'play' in it and can be wiggled and
jiggled while in any gear, perhaps about 1/4" back and forth. Is this
just a symptom of a worm pin or whatnot which locks into the
grooves/cutouts in the upper shift mechanism? Or is there something more
significant happening here? By the way, I've got over 180,000 miles on
my transmission, with absolutely no problems. I've changed the fluid
perhaps every 3 years, and just recently changed the filter, pan gasket,
as well, for the very first time. I think simply draining the fluid and
replacing with new generally keeps it in great working order, because
the filter/screen was totally clean, and I had no very few miniscule
'shavings' in the pan on the magnets. In any case, I've been happy with
the auto trans in my car, except for the 'thunk' from the rearend which
I've gotten upon rapid deceleration for years and years now. I'm
wondering, maybe that's just a worn 'rear-end' unit? Probably just a
symptom I have to live with, as it causes no real driveability problems.

Anway, I'd appreciate some information on how to tighten up this
shifter...thanks.
