Re: Replacing Water Pump

Mort and all

This is a value judgement each buyer must make, on limited evidence.

I don't have hard evidence to establish whether oem pumps are better than
replacement pumps, but all else being equal, I myself would go for the oem
pump, because I think PSA's design standards and quality control are
excellent. But I have seen impellers loosen on oe pumps which I haven't
seen on a replacement pump (but then there are many more oem pumps
operating with high mileages than replacement pumps so you expect to see
more failures, numerically).

Peugeot stamps their impellers from sheet brass (xn, xd), most other pumps
use a cast solid brass impeller which some poeple think is better.

When, occasionally, Peugeot pulls a dumb design trick, such as the N9T
fanhub being pressed onto the waterpump shaft requiring a special puller to
remove it, replacement pumps do the same thing--they have to copy the
original or the pulley wouldn't fit. Many expensive fanclutch pulleys have
been ruined by mechanics assuming the pulley would come off with a standard
3-jaw puller. But you are stuck with that regardless of the pump you choose.

Bottom line: If I had to pay the same $ for oe and replacement pumps I
would go for the oe. What kind of price premium I would pay for oe would
depend on variables, odds, and guesses unique to each situation.
