88 505 SW8 AC fan malfunction

i noticed today that when i turned the ac on I did not hear the usual
whirr of the electric fan. Instead i heard a series of intermittent
clicks from behind the glove box. I dropped the glove box and
identified the relay sitting in the extreme right side to be the one
that was clicking/tapping.

Are these related causally? What else chould I check? Should'nt the
electric fan always come on when the ac is activated? thanks in
advance.
