I had a similar problem with my old Fiat 850 Spider (Weber 2-bbl carb). It
turned out that the idle jets in the carb were blocked with debris, hence I used
the choke method to raise the rpms so the engine wouldn't die. Find out where
the idle jets are in the 504's carb, take them out, get a soft paintbrush, rip
out a couple of bristles, and poke a bristle through all the holes in the jets
and see if any debris comes out. Could be the problem and solution.

Subject: 504 (gas automatic) sleep disorder

Last night, in its sleep, something went wrong with my 77 504, auto, gas
car. It ran fine yesterday, but when I tried to start it today it stalled
every time the idle went below 2Krpm. I ran it with the choke way out and
sort of heel toeing it and popping it into neutral and giving it gas when I
approached stop signs and the like.
I checked all the various vacuum lines and found all to be connected.
The timing has not slipped and everything looks fine.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
