405 Mi16 fans

Jeff,

It only took two months to take our advice and clean the contacts in that connector for the temp sensor for cooling fans?

The system is functioning normally, and despite your claim that the fans are not coming on, they are, each at 1/2 speed, so you don't hear the overpowering whine of both fans at full speed. How else would you explain thermal regulation to 190 or less degrees f?

Trygve,

your transmission oil drain plug is no longer able to be removed; where is that located? If it's the same place as on an Mi16, the plug is one of the bolts in the tranmission vertical "pan" facing out to the left front wheel. If that is the case, your options would be severely limited, due to space and access constraints, leaving you with not much hope for a chisel and hammer and firing blows to the bolt in a reverse-tangental unscrewing pattern.

What I would try would be to use a dremel tool to inflict a deep groove in a straight line across the bolt's head face, and buy a $10 impact driver tool, the kind with interchangeable bits for phillips head and flat slot head screws, and pattern the groove to fit the largest flat slot bit. Once you get the groove at least 1/8" deep, lay the tool into it and give it a good wailing with a 3-lb. hammer. That should bust it loose. An alternative would be to drill and tap the center of the plug with a 3/8" fine thread left-handed thread , avoiding going through the plug all the way, and then screwing a bolt into that threaded hole and tightening (left-handed) the bolt, which would provide the force needed to remove that plug. If using this method, make sure to use a bottoming tap after cutting the initial threads with a regular tap. Finding a left-handed tap set and bolt could be a problem, though. Perhaps a large-bore easy-out would be beneficial in this case! Good luck.

Bob Bruce, how about a write-up on the 405 torsion bar height adjustments that you went through recently? Of maybe j.p. would care to share some stories of such an ordeal? I have the factory manuals, but would like someone who has done this to pipe in with results, too.
