I apologize for the last post - hit the wrong button! Anyway, Robert, I just
had a bunch of bushings replaced on the front end of my '89 405. First of all,
I had similar sound-symptoms to you, although near the end the clunk got more
pronounced. In the end, I had my front sway bar bushings and front A-arm
support bushings replaced. Can't tell you how to determine if they are bad,
except by visual inspection to see if the rubber has perished.
One more thing to look into is the steering rack. It has been known to produce
sounds similar to those you describe over bumps.

Subject: 405 front end diagnostics

I am curious if anyone can tell me how to check the front bushings. they
appear ok but I experience a noise when driving over the smallest ripple
on the road. I dont believe I have a problem with the struts because I
cannot duplicate the noise by bouncing the front end.
I would not call it a "clunk" not quite that bass a sound, slightly
higher. I believe I am in need of upper strut mounts but dont think that
that is the cause of this sound, as the smallest bump will create the
noise and there isnt that much movement of the strut associated with the
noise. any tips would be appreciated
