Yes it will fit, bolt holes, linkage and even the clutch splines are the same.
There is however some minor differences between the earlier BE1/5 and the later BE3/5
transmissions, the BE1 has reverse next to first with a ring to pull on the shifter, BE3 has reverse
next to fourth with no ring. fitting a BE3 to a BE1 linkage is no problem, just leave the reverse
lockout cable unconnected, the other way requires swapping the linkage, or it will be too easy
to put in reverse instead first by mistake.
The crank position sensor is also placed differently, you'll have to remove it from the originally
BE1 equipped engine in order to fit the BE3, but this sensor is not always used by the ECU so
it can be removed. The BE3 has the sensor mounted in the bellhousing about 20-30 degrees away.
So be sure to check if your sensor is hooked up or not.
The gear ratio is a little different, the mi16 has a higher ratio (revs will be higher for same speed).
but it's nothing to worry about, an engine with the Mi 16 transmission will do about 2000 RPM
at 70 km/h (unless the US versions are different), which is fine for city driving, but a bit noisy at
the highway speeds, but i understand you have very low speed limits on the highways in the US.
Note that this is written from experience in swapping a BE1 transmission from a 205 of unknown
year into a -90 Mi16 originally with BE3 , and a BE3 transmission from a -90 Mi16 into an -88
405GRi originally with BE1, so it may not be correct for all years, engine management systems,
models and so on.
I don't know if the mi16 got the BE3 before the rest of the models, but i guess it could be so....
