My wife and I will be taking a trip from Connecticut to Florida in a month or
so in our '87 Peugeot 505 STX with 92,500 miles (I'm the original owner) and
I would appreciate input from the group on two things:
1. What reasonable spare parts would you recommend taking?
2. What are the names and telephone numbers of reliable Peugeot mechanics
along the way?
Regarding No. 1 (above) my thoughts are to take appropriate fuses, a spare
relay (which is common for the ignition system, fuel pump and sending power
to the brain), a set of belts, a distributor cap and a spare tire and jack.
I would check and/or change all appropriate fluids before leaving. I should
also add that I'm focused on things that would incapacitate the car; for
example I'm not worried if I lose the air conditioning compressor or my
windshield washer pump motor. And, of course, I realize that there is a
practical limit as to what one can reasonably take: I'm not going to take a
spare alternator, starter or transmission, for instance. The other thing
I'll do is sign up again with Triple A, which came automatically for a few
years when I first bought the Peugeot.
Regarding No. 2 (above) I haven't planned out my exact route yet, but know
I'll be going through Charlotte, NC. I expect to be passing through
southeastern New York, southeastern Pennsylvania, central Maryland, central
Virginia, central North Carolina (toward Charlotte), central South Carolina,
southeastern Georgia and the towns of Leesburg and Orlando in Florida.
The '87 STX has been very reliable; I have never had a breakdown away from
home that incapacitated the car. In addition to normal tune-ups and fluid
changes the only things I've had to replace have been the waterpump and air
conditioning compressor. Believe it or not I have never changed the brake
pads on this car since new, though they're now getting to the point where the
fronts, in particular, should be changed. So, I'll probably throw a set of
new pads on the car before I leave.
I recently came back from another trip to Pennsylvania (with my '83 Porsche
928) where I had a fuel pump relay failure. This is what got me to thinking
about asking the group for their input regarding my upcoming Florida trip in
the STX. I can imagine folks out there who have had problems and have
decided to carry certain critical spare parts based on their experience.
