A while back I took the recommendation of Mr. Frank Bowman -- peugeot mechanic
working out of the boston area -- and advanced the timing a little on the 2.2
engine that powers the SW8 my wife drives. I also changed the distributor cap
and rotor. I believe that I reported to this list then that I was amazed at
the difference. indeed, the 2.2 is not know for its performance but with the
timing slightly advanced now I routinely get up past 90 and more when I need to
pass someone in open highway. On trip back from NY city last weekend I was
doing 80-85 all the way and the temp gauge barely rose past the 1/4 mark and
the car cruised willingly. Actually, even before tweaking the timing my sw8
had no trouble getting past 70 mph. the major difference has been how quickly
it gets to 70 and more now with timing advanced. So I guess I am a little
puzzled as to why your 2.2 (wagon?) has trouble getting beyond 70. At any
rate, I would highly recommend the timing advance to anyone with the zdjl 2.2.
also, I agree with Brian Holm that in the turbo diesel engine the 3 speed (or 4
speed ) auto is a better choice than the 5 speed manual and actually is faster
in many cases. A sw8 is a bit heavier than the regular wagon and with extra
people and luggage in it a 2.5 in my judgment is going to have trouble moving
quickly from stop to about 40-50 mph. after that a good diesel engine like
the 2.5 will of course hold its own.
lastly, won't putting a 2.5 td into a SwF be more work than putting in a v6?
