I suffered the same problem as you with my '89 405 Mi16, and my car
suffered a cracked exhaust pipe where the cat met the pipe, and the rattly
cat. I had a generic one installed for about $325 and have had no adverse
effects at all. Spending $1000 seems like a total waste, since when you
think about the value of the car overall, an OEM cat is worth between 1/4
and 1/2 the value of the car...$325 seemed plenty to me.

I've driven the car about 2000 miles since then...very happy!

    Good luck!

P.S. I put Dunlop Sport W-10s on my refurbished '91 rims (195/55/15s as
well) and so far, I'm pretty happy. They are a bit "weird acting" in the
cold...when first starting out, the tires seem to jump a bit when turning
(might be my steering rack, but I never noticed it in warm weather with the
    14 inch rims)

i just had some new tyres fitted to my pug, on the way home i noticed
a rattle, from the exhaust, thinking that maybe they have crushed
someting with the jacks i took it back, and after that i went to an
exhaust shop were i was diagnosed with a dead catalytic converter,
not sure if the tyre boys did it or not, they said itll cost about
$au250 for a universal catalytic converter or 1000+ for a geniune
one, i was wondering if a universal one would cause any restriction
or damage to my pug? or if going to a wreacker for a genuine one
    would be anygood?
the exhaust shop guys said my cars running ritch and would have to
have a it tuned after they put a new cat on it so it runs right with
it all in? whats in volved in this process?
    thanks
ps tyres are nankang ns-1 195/55/15" a cheep company setup by
yokohama with teh same moulds, there directional and seem quight good
in the limited time i drove my car
