In Nov. '97 I had Greg install a pair of rebuilt carbs (needed to pass
smog inspection) on my '74 504. Greg had originally rebuilt the carbs
for Glen Edinger, my regular mechanic, who used them for 1500 miles and
then sold them to me. I would have had Glen install them, but he was
    out of town.

I brought the car in, and over the next few days, Greg found a couple
of other problems: the water pump was leaking, and there were a couple
of stripped studs. Greg gave me parts-and-labor estimates for the extra
work, which I authorized. When I went in to pick up the car, the bill
was a bit over $1200, several hundred dollars higher than expected,
even allowing for the extra work. I don't really remember what ran up
the bill so, although Greg explained it at the time.

I think Greg should have spelled out how much of a bill I'd be looking
at b4 embarking on the work, especially because the car's body and
    paint definitely weren't the greatest--4 or 5 on a 10-point scale.
Around this time someone in Seattle was advertising a 504 for sale for
~$1200. I never went to look at it, but I'd surprised if it wasn't
cosmetically a lot better than my car. I think that under Washington
state law, I would have had a good case to balk at paying for the work
past a certain point, but I didn't have the stomach for a fight and
wanted to put the matter to bed.

I have to say in fairness that a few years ago, I had Greg install an
exhaust system (mail-ordered from Brian Holm) on the car, and he stuck
