I originally joined the list just like you, for mechanical data, and advice.
You've probably seen the last couple of weeks where ther has been this
"speed" thread going on. I have to admit, I contributed to it also but I
think you're right. Its giving the list a "hot-rod" complexion. This
thread will fade. You'll find that the list is a valuable assist for
know-how and finding parts.
