After the replacing the brake pads on a 405 last night I remembered
the reasons I left the auto-repair industry. Geez those Lucas-Girling
rear calipers suck! I had to use pieces from my pulley extracter kit
and a pair of channel locks to get the stupid thing reset. If I had
one of those nifty screw-in piston compressors it would've made
things easier (slightly). For some reason arm strength was not enough
to retract the piston, and the cheap piston tool I have did not fit
exactly right--I even had to modify that with my Dremel tool.
Just thinking about the nerd who was responsible for this widely used
caliper design pissed me off even more. He probably got a bonus or
something!
It reminded me of a time at the Audi dealer when I replaced the
brakes on an Audi 100 (I think) then I swore I would never do brakes
on an Audi ever again.
I wish they had put some kind of internal parking brake drum back
there and installed a "normal" caliper (like a bunch of other cars
out there). Or, just use a caliper similar to the 505. I think the
