Today, Luis came over and brought our friend's '84 wagon. He was
complaining about the power antenna not working. This is an elderly
gentleman and we try to keep him rolling with his 3 Lions. Anyway, I
was surprised to find out how Luis approached this antenna. We had
ordered a new mast from WH and I thought we were going to have to
remove the whole power unit from the car and operate on it. But, not
so! Instead Luis removed the small cap at the top of the mast above
the slotted nut. Then, he turned on the ignition and pulled the old
mast and geared nylon string out! He said we could put the new one
on same way. But it didn't work! As we were putting the new string
in the hole, it got stuck! So we pulled the whole thing and found
two problems. The first was that the end of the new string was blunt
and had to be rounded on the end so that it would get past the
sholder that it can trip on as it goes into the spool gear. So we
rounded it with a file on the end. Then it went in just fine and
wound around the spool. But the antenna would only go down about 70%
and then jam and make noise. So we took a close look at the drive
gear and found that it was worn out. So I found a PP antenna that I
had apart and we checked the gear on that one which was good.
Installed the gear in place of the worn one, and bingo, we were back
in business with a good working unit. We pumped a little duralube
oil in the works for good measure and now our friend David, has
things the way he wants them. You see he wants to listen to the
radio on his way around town, and be able to go to the car wash and
not worry about the antenna getting wiped out. He also doesn't want
the local kids to do a bend job on his antenna. So there wasn't much
else we could do, but fix it! Thanks for listening. Bill P.S. On a
good day with a good gear and filed string end, you should be able to
do that job fast. Don't forget some duralube down the hole! Oh, and
I think the geared side points toward the front of the car, on the
wagon anyway. WH has the masts, but expensive.
