Voltage drop and old-old wires.

I suspect, as a former radio and radio-relay repair guy, including equipment on vehicles, that both our new UK List Member and the other guy are correct.
Heat, corrosion and time take their toll and resulting high resistance joints as well as "loosening" of grounds and aging components will cause erratic operation and equipment failure.
Perhaps only Daimler-Mercedes could afford it but after every grueling competition, Mercedes tossed all that could be tossed; there being no sense to racing with garbage, to quote their top racing officials, not to define your Peugeots; I do miss my 604-V6, 5 speed.
For your sakes, for your safety; it requires that the throttle respond, that there be no electrical failures and fires, try to replace every electrical component and wire that has deteriorated. Expensive? Yes. Prudent? Yes.
Mercedes tended to win. You should intend to be safe.
