I have a 1988 4hp22 STX. It needed head gaskets at 200K. When the
heads were off, my mechanic told me that he could see no wear on
anything to do with head or cylinder walls. He said the heads were
as new. The engine currently runs smoothly and noiseless.
I also have a 5 speed trans from and STX that I removed from a car in
the PP. I got it complete with the engine as it was cheap. The
spline on the trans spun and owner junked it. This is one of the
weaknesses of these cars. You must check that there is no play in
the drive line. There can be other reasons for play, but you better
be right if you think splines are ok. Shot splines are a lot of work
for those of us who do it ourselves, and very expensive for all else.
If the drive train is tight, the car is a bargain. My car has pretty
hard shift between 1rst and 2nd. These engines have enough power to
squeel the wheels on a shift from 1rst to 2nd even with 205 65 15
tires! Bill
