General: ATF Type III and type II compatibility

I have a transaxle (Renault to be exact) that wants ATF Type II. Now I can
probably guess that Type III supersedes Type II, but I am wondering if there
is any advantage/disadvantage to either one.
One thing is for certain is that that transmission is very heat sensitive so
a cooler is in the works.
