Re: Cleaning injectors and intake

I generally like to avoid using injectors from a parts vehicle. If
the car has been inactive for too long, the moisture in the gasoline
will take its toll on the internals of the fuel rail and injectors.
Always use fresh injectors, or take them from a car that has *just*
been declared a parts source.
The single most effective injector, valve, and combustion chamber
cleaner I have ever seen is from BG Chemicals. It's call 44K and is
*not* available over-the-counter.
Go to a local new car dealership or a larger independent auto shop
and get a can. Add the entire can to 1/2 tank (or more) of gasoline
and drive the car. As a professional tech I can say that this stuff
isn't snake oil and it totally blows away anything from STP or
whatever else available at Walmart.
One application will clean the injectors better than any other
treatment short of actually disassembling and rebuilding a set.
Another cool trick that makes the intake ports and valves whistle
clean is to run the engine off a can of carb/combustion cleaner
especially if it contains Naptha (gives best results). I've done this
to countless cars and am always amazed at the results. I made the
intake runners on my XN6 STI "sweat" one time--the cooling effect
from evaporation of the carb cleaner. If I couldn't find a cleaner
containing Naptha, I usually used plain CRC carb cleaner... don't
ever use brake parts cleaner, it doesn't burn very well.
Check out some "Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner" from a Chrysler
dealer--if it has Naptha in it, that's the choice stuff to use.
Motorcraft *had* a good product too, but they seem to have
reformulated it lately.
Remove the intake ducting enough to expose the throttle plate. Have
someone operate the starter while you get the car running off the
carb cleaner. Don't open the throttle too much or you might induce
some backfire, which will scare the snot out of you. It is possible
to keep the engine running pretty steadily at low RPM on the carb
cleaner. Take a break a few times to avoid overheating the catalytic
converter.
