PLEA TO TD OWNERS!

Today, I rolled off the freeway after going to help an old friend
with two Xn-6 wagons. You know, the usual. One would not start on
the key and the other one had the dome light plastic falling apart.
So I loaded up with my battery drill, thin countersink headed sheet
metal screws, a spare relay, a jumper wire, and some extra plastic
dome light units from PP. Got up there and found that the problem
was the ignition switch which I didn't have, and told him to keep
using his emergency push button starter switch that was on the car
when he got it. Next we went to the other wagon and neatly placed
two holes with counter sunk surface on dome light unit about center
on each side. Installed screws and that one will not be coming loose
again for a long time. Careful if you do this, not to hit wires and
smoke dome and healiner and possibly whole Lion too! Now to the bad
scenario. After we headed back as I was saying above, and low and
behold as we pulled off the freeway, we came up behind an '82 TD
which belongs to a neighbor a few blocks away. This thing was puking
smoke and burned oil at us and it was coming in through the outside
air vent as it was open on a very nice day. Completely oblivious to
this, he pulled left with us and went on down and turned right to get
to his place. We got out from behind him quickly as my wife was
complaining bitterly. How do I know that my car is not the same?
Because my wife followed me for 60 miles the other day, one car
length behind in the STX and did not complain at all. Now this
neighbor is probably running worn out rings and dished nozzles which
will anger anyone in his rear view mirror! Please, if you are
running one of these worn out units, give us all a break and get it
off the road until you can afford to repair it. Typically, these cars
use oil and don't get very good fuel mileage. Perhaps someone on
this thread can give you advice on how to repair the engine so that
it runs as clean as possible or maybe use some miracle such as engine
restorer. I will go and discuss this with my neighbor. Hopefully he
will understand what it is like to be behind him. How can he know?
He is generally ahead of his smoke! Bill P.S. Hope this doesn't
offend anyone here, but you may not be aware of the stink you are
presenting to those following you. Get someone to follow you so you
will know what is going on. A good tight diesel is relatively odor
free.
