Yikes!!!
I'm not trying to sound like a smart-ass, but how is the non-ABS
system easier to maintain? And, how often do they go bad?
And out of the many major components in the ABS system, which one is
the "ABS unit"? The pump, the accumulator, the valve block, the
master cylinder, the ECU, the plethora of sensors...
Bleeding the brakes on the ABS system is a cinch--the rear circuit
flushes itself. Failures really aren't that common either. In fact,
they're less common than non-ABS failures. I have replaced a few
vacuum boosters and master cylinders on non-ABS cars here and
there... Only ONE ABS hydraulic pump has taken a dump-ola. The only
other ABS repairs I've had to do was one wiring harness check, and
several routine brake fluid changes. Plus, the braking performance is
*far* superior to that of even the best human driver.
I'm sure you could source the replacement parts you need for less
than a complete AND *proper* down-grade... Brian Holm, Sunset
Coachmen, etc. are invaluable resources--give them a whirl.
