I had a similar experience on an '84 XN6 car recently and because everything
was working in the dash other than the tach, I didn't check the fuses first.
As it turned out, on this car, the tach has its own power supply which also
controls some emission controls. The problem turned out to be some rubbing
wires against the right relay mount ( buy the strutt tower) , that had
shorted out and melted together before blowing the fuse.
Since your car is running, I would suspect the power supply to the tach
which also controls the purge solenoids for emissions for the carbon
canister. I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me to tell you what else
it operates, I could do a little more digging if you need it.
