Joe, for your style of driving, you would be happier with a 204. The extra
length and weight made the 304 break loose in a curve way too soon compared
to the 204 which was pretty hard to do. After driving a 505 hard through the
the curves, it would probably drive you nuts having to slow down with the
504 as it doesn't handle quite as well. It is surprising what a little
difference in track and length will do for cars with the same suspension. As
for the XD90, it was a troublesome engine compared to the later XD2. Forever
replacing sleeve seals and hard to start especially in cool weather.
My 204 diesel used to get 65mpg (imp gal.) no matter how I drove it or how
loaded it was. The only times the mileage dropped was either because the
roof rack was loaded or I was towing something. To get that thing started in
the winter, even plugged in, the starter would get 24V to crank it over fast
enough. I put well over 100K miles on that thing with only replacing the
alternator once, not even a brake job, in those days I didn't know what a
    brake pedal was for anyway.
The 404, the best car Peugeot ever built as far as I'm concerned in any
model. Roomy, comfortable, reliable and cheap to drive, also a real
workhorse. The only drawback was the fuel injected motor, lots of power and
reliable but high maintenance compared to the other engines. A hard driver
would have to replace the crank bearings every 50,000 miles or so and if the
car was parked for any length of time, the injection system would need a
cleaning and adjustment, that was with leaded gas though, it is not as bad
with unleaded fuel. Fun to drive though. The XN1 engine with the twin carb
is almost as fast and not so finicky. Now before someone gets on my case
about it, I mean finicky for a Peugeot, not English car finicky, you don't
have to change the settings everytime a cloud appears, just adjust the
settings at every major tune-up time.
