My cylinder leakdown tester was good at detecting head cracks
sometimes. I'd just turn the regulator all the way up and watch for
bubbles in the coolant tank. I suppose it may not work for a really
small crack.
Does the car run rough for the first few seconds after cold starting?
This is a sign of coolant accumulation in the cylinder.
I would tend to think this is a headgasket problem... *most* of the
cracked heads I've seen start out with the rought cold start and some
steam/coolant smell from the exhaust. The coolant/oil mix occurs when
the crack comprimises the head gasket and it blows.
