You didn't mention what year 405 it is, but that "GLDT" means that we
stateside owners don't know a lot about the more recent 405s. However, if
it's anything like the 405s over here....
The heater fan is always turning (a concept I personally dislike), so the
screech can be continuous. I have no idea why (or if) there is a
connection with the direction of the steering. But two out of four of the
405s I have or have had have had (that's not a typo) the fan screech
problem. From my experience it is easier to cure than most believe.
Case in point - my 1990 405 wagon came with a screeching fan (purchased
it with 80,000 miles). Having unsuccessfully fought this problem in an
earlier Mi16, I decided this time to spray some "TV tuner" aerosol
cleaner/lubricant on the rotors as much as possible. They had a rusty
coating on them. This helped a bit, for a few weeks. Next attempt was to
get out my little tub of lithium grease. I stuffed some grease into the
area at the bottom of the rotor, where I presume the axle bearing is. The
grease improved the situation markedly for a few weeks. Pulling the fan
out yet again, I stuffed some more grease in there, as best I could.
Three months now, and the most I've heard is a couple of faint peeps
occasionally. I could pull it out and give it one more application, but
then I'd forget it ever had the problem, and rob myself of the
satisfaction of having fixed it!
Cheap fixes are the best.
The fan is easy to pull out; just three screws hold it up in that plastic
housing under the dash. I recommend using a mirror to locate the screws,
unless you like crawling under the dash on your back. Pull it out, stuff
some grease into the end of the fan housing, and see if it improves.
