taching too high???

I have a problem, @ least I think. While cruising down the
interstate @ about 70, my '85 505 STI is tached up to about 3 3/4. I
doesn't seem quite normal and my fuel consumption is enormous. Could
my tranny not be shifting into its' proper gear? Any
thoughts/comments are greatly appreciated.
