    Folks,

My 1988 SW8 has really sucked, lately. NOT the usual pleasure to drive. A
shaking in my seat at about 55 or so. Lots of rattly and flapping drive train
noise. Joe Grubbs rode with me when my daughter and I went to the Charlotte
gathering of the fleet in Sept. He thought that the rear transmission mount
    stuff was the problem.

So, armed with rubber bushings and bushing dog bones for the rear trans
mounts as well as a new universal, we went to task on a lift in a
    well-equipped shop.

    Here's the story:

Today, Andreas and I worked on the smashed door peugeot. We lowered the
covered drive shaft after removing exhaust and disconnecting shocks, rear
brakes, parking brake cables, etc., etc.

We inspected the universal and it seemed to have about 1/32" to a little more
slop in it. The splines all looked good.

We replaced the universal joint then we replaced $100 worth of rods and
bushings that support the rear of the trans (and half the engine). We worked
about 5 hours with both of us turning wrenches. I guess it's an 8 hour job,
    at least.

We also replaced a rear brake cyl (broken bleeder) and bled the brakes.

The improvement is remarkable. It's like a new car. All the drive train noise
and flapping sounds have gone away.

It's not a bad job with a helper and a lift. At 48, I think I'd choose NOT to
    do it on the ground.

I'll bet LOTS of you have cars needing this service.

It's expensive, but I'll bet the car will do another 100,000 miles,
comfortably, now. At present, the clock shows about 150,000 miles, but I
suspect the previous owner ran it 10 or 20K miles with a busted speedo cable.
The trans was replaced with an Errickson unit at about 130K.

Thanks to Joe G. for the diagnostic ride!!
