I retained a pair of ADS 300i plate mount speakers from my 504D wagon
(mounted in the foot well) and
had them installed in the doors of my '85 505GL wagon. Here are my
observations.
1 The 'pockets' in the doors had to be cut apart and reglued- not
very successful. Also- my car has manual window winders and it's a tight
fit- broken nails have been a complaint. Then again- the size of the
300i's is a consideration- they extend more than an inch from the door
surface and are rectilinear.
2 The door panels are not very rigid so a
lot of the bass energy is
lost. I'm not a fan of thumping bass but I do like accurate, balanced
sound and the footwells (at least in the 504) provide a much more rigid
mounting surface.
3 Imaging and overall high frequency response is not ideal. If I'm
listening to Car Talk or All Things Considered then it doesn't matter too
much but Bach Orchestral Suites or Whitesnake...
4 The installer didn't do a very good job and was out of business
within 3 months after they did my installation- one does get what one pays
for.
5 I've heard a set of MB Quart separates that I liked- 6.5" woofer
that would almost fit in the foot wells and high frequency drive units
that could be mounted on the upper front side of the doors.
