They may not have a taste for sports cars anymore, but the French certainly
do seem to have a lock on the hot hatch.
They were the first to introduce one (the Renault 5 Gordini - a month ahead
of the original VW GTI), they produced what's arguably the best one ever
(the 205 GTI) and the best turbo hatch (R5 GT Turbo), and the last
rear-drive hot hatch (Talbot-Sunbeam Lotus), as well as the first
super-hatch (Clio Williams) as well as producing the best current entry
level (106 GTI, Saxo VTR/VTS), and top-of-the-market (Clio 172, 206 GTI 180)
hot hatches.
We may not get these cars here but the whole world holds the French hot
hatches in very high esteem.
In France I think people see cars like this as being far more practical
useful than sports cars.
