Sure, the Alpine-Renault A106, A 108 and A110 were real sports cars.
To that I would ad the Matra Djet series followed by the MX530, and
earlier the Deutsch-Bonnet, Panhard CD, Simca cabriolets, 204
Cabriolet, Facel-Vega Facellia, etc. There were a few.
Then there are the hot sedans: Dauphine 1093, 8 Gordini, Simca Rallye
II and 3, Renault 5 Alpine (introduced in 1978, two years after the
Golf GTI), Peugeot 205 GTI, ...
