In France people like front wheel drive and manual transmission.
You can't really know why that is. 'Cause these days we all get stuck in
    traffic.
We don't get SUV but Renault Espace, Peugeot 806, 807, Renault Megane,
Citroen Xsara Picasso, C8 for the family (all pretty close to the
concept of SUV anyway) or small cars like the Clio, the 206, the Twingo.
There are a lot of Renault 5 and 205 left in the cities because they
come cheap and don't eat up much of the budget (some 205 and Renault 5
with automatic transmissions still). A few Ford Fiesta, VW Polo...

    Prices today:
Diesel can be up to .89 euros per liter (US$ .87)
Gas Super 98 up to 1.16 euros per liter (US$ 1.14)
    Total taxes are 80%.

Who told you this? It is my understanding that Peugeot is still
using ZF units (along with most other European manufacturers)--or
atleast they were in very recent history.

Being the immense and *extremely* successful company that they are,
it is likely they will continue to do whatever is needed to stay on
top of things--just like any other modern auto manufacturer.

I think Peugeot's reluctance to build an SUV is admirable--I can't
stand the gas-guzzling useless heaps of metal. Unfortunately they
are having to give in, thanks to the general public's stupidity.

Peugeot's largest street car engine is only 3.0 liters, a V6. Next
in line is a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder; The HDi diesel engines are
acknowledged as advanced and exceptionally clean... and the HPi
direct-inject petrol engines are highly efficient and quite unusual.
Atleast Peugeot seems to care a tiny bit about our filthy abused
planet--the same can't be said for many domestic manufacturers.

I hope Peugeot continues to do well, with or without the help of
North America's hairbrained market... They deserve it!

In fact, it would be best if they stayed as far as possible from
this POS market--perhaps that's why they haven't attempted to
reenter, they don't want to taint themselves with BS.
