to them, or as a performance mod is it a waste of money ?

I've had a K&N insert in my 405 for about 6 years. I bought it
because I used to live in a very dusty area and the OEM filters would
get choked with dust quite quickly, especially in the spring. Mine
    fits in the standard airbox.

Don't buy a K&N expecting better performance than a clean paper
filter will offer. No car manufacturer fits paper filters that
restrict airflow when clean. That would be stupid. It's only when a
paper filter element gets dirty that any difference would be noticed -
the K&N flows air better when dirty. Which means the engine is
ingesting somewhat more particulates than it would if you had a paper
    filter element in there.

IMO the less effective filtration of a K&N is not a big deal and if
you live in a dusty environment it's better to have one than drive
around with chronically choked paper elements. If you live in a
normal area, don't bother switching to K&N or any other aftermarket
    air filter.
