Hello, all.
Archive this one for Ripley's.
I bought a 505 on eBay primarily because it was a diesel. I paid all of
$445. Parts of it were excellent, as the old English cartoon goes, and I
have been replacing the wear items as I go along and having a very nice time
of it.
I just blindly ordered the trunk lid hydraulic strut, as I was growing tired
of forearm bruises, and was a bit shocked at its price but the improvement
in livability was almost worth it.
However, the first time I was driving near dusk I was pulled over and told
that none of my rear lights were working. It's a small town, so I said I had
had the rear shocks replaced and I would have it attended to Monday, no
formalities invoked. And I indeed had had new rears put on and I assumed a
connector got knocked loose.
I went out today to eliminate other causes, and the real cause was that the
PO's teenage son had cut into the wiring harness to power his trunkmounted
amps (which did not come with the car) and the wire he cut into (license
plate lights) ran past the trunk hinge arm. The old strut never went all the
way up. The new one went all the way up, stressed the wire at the cut-in,
and it broke.
A butterfly flapped its wings...
