Hi everyone, i am back after a couple of months searching for my
first peugeot diesel...

sorry for this ramble,

I have found a great condition 309 GR (not sure if 1.7 or 1.9, has
lucas injection pump), perfect for me to use over the british winter
while my kawasaki stays dry. ;)

there is one huge problem I really would appreciate any advice for.
two days ago I hardly knew what a diesel engine was! am now on a
steep learning curve. i am reasonalby competetant, and have enough
tools..

the previous owner had filled the tank in france a short while
before, and then the car gave him running problems..?

Symptoms:
when i first saw the car on saturday the owner had the idleing wound
right up to 2000 rpm, and there was excessive diesel smoke.
eventually I fumbled around with an adjuster and got it too 1000,
still very smoky, and erratic.. I tried it on the road and it was
just running, stalled a lot and felt like it was misfiring? really
badly.. too much fuel?

decided to get it onto an open road to get some speed up, went ok for
a couple of miles then lost all power, pulled over, waited, tried
again same problem, and again..
got away from the main road...

suddenly, the car felt perfect, ran perfect, no smoke, idleing spot
on! continued like this for 1 - 2 hours of city driving. I
thought 'wonderful' I have brought a badly runnning vehicle and now
it has cured itself!

to cut a long story short, the symptons came back later on, now the
car wont even fire up and run for more than 30 seconds, even on
almost full throttle..?

is it possible that the full tank of fuel could be the problem? I am
sure he put diesel in, it is clear and certainly smells like diesel..

what if the fuel filter is completely blocked? might this give these
symptons?

is there any thing I can check tonight, to find out why it wont even
run at all now?

is there something electrical I could disonnect temporarily, which
could be shutting down the engine?

please any suggestions, the car needs to be moved as it is blocking
someones access..

I have haynes 309 manual, and the diesel supplement manual...
