Matt,
A lot of companies are specifying torque plus angle for fasteners where it
is desirable to tightly control claming force. The angle is enough to get
between the yield point and ultimate strength of the bolt. (In other words,
it will cause permanent deformation of the bolt, but will not break it.) In
this plastic zone, a little more or less turn of the bolt is not nearly as
critical as it was prior to yield. I've just eyeballed the angle in the
past. Yes, it is probably best to use the right tool. If you are just
doing this once you should be able to fabricate something out of cardboard
and tape to get close enough. What is important is if you overshoot, leave
it be. Don't loosen it and start over. If you do, you should be getting a
new bolt. This goes for the bolts you took out, as well. They should all
be discarded and replaced.

Subject: Angle measuring on head bolt refitting
Hi all I need a bit of advice.
I have a lovely 405 GLXDT (GRDT outside of UK) which
unfortunately developped a head gasket problem. I took
the head off and followed the Haynes instructions as
to changing the gasket no problem. However the angular
phase on the head bolt refitting caused me a problem
as I cant seem to find any proper angular measuring
equipment. I live in France and they hardly even know
of torque wrenches here let alone angluar wrenches.
Anyone know where I can find one that wont break the
bank?
Cheers muchly in advance
