A big thanks to all who gave me advice on my 309 diesel problem,
unfortunatley I have still to fix the car, the symptons are now that
it will run cleanly from cold for 30 seconds to a minute, then will
run rough and smoke and then suddenly 'cut out' from then on...

So far I have cleaned the fuel filter canister, which had a little
dirt and no apparent water in, chanded the fuel filter, purged air
from the filter and tried many times to prime the injector pump.
Renewed the air filter and cleaned it's housing. Proved the priming
diaphragm works, and proved that the fuel in the tank is ok (by
running the car from a temporary tank and fresh diesel)

so, I hope/guess that it can only be the injector pump or injectors..
