Here in the UK the roads are salted when there's even a slight risk of
    overnight frost.
A car with over 100k is considered a high miler and a candidate for the
scrapheap. I once owned a six year old Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD (fantastic
car), with 170k miles on it... an ex taxi. I was shocked at how well it
    ran/looked.

Another thing to consider is the value of cars here. Whereas you'd probably
repair a 10 year old car with a blown engine, over here it'd be junked. My
current car is just over 10 years old, and is worth £400 at most, so any
major repair is just not worthwhile. There also seems to be a 'disposable
car' culture here, where people will buy someting for under £200 and run it
til the MOT expires, or it breaks. I used to do it myself.. I've owned 12
cars (one at a time!) in my 8 years of driving. I had a 1989 405SRi (cost me
£100), completely rotten but ran ok. It needed welding on the chassis, so I
just ran it til it finally gave up.

    > Bugger the innovations of 50+ years ago. In my view, Peugeot needs
to concentrate on the basics - reliability, durability, and build
    quality.

I was talking to some east coast people about cars and I was surprised
to find their interest in long running cars not that high. They all
cars rust out because of the salting during winter and that's just a
fact of life. I was shocked as they don't do it out in the west here
and cars are expected to last 200K+.

I wonder, do they salt the roads in Europe and could this be a factor in
why long running cars don't seem to be as important to some people?
