Japanese vs Peugeot:
My take. I'm a Toyota guy. I'm constnatly amazed at the
overengineering of their assemblies. If 3 bolts are good enough,
they'll use 4. Bolts that never see moisture are top quality zinc
plated flange bolts. Threaded inserts in body panels. I've yet to find
a threaded hold in my 505. There's usually a nut on the other end of
the bolt.
When Peugeot sets their mind to something, they're as successful as when
Toyota does. Styling, handling, interior, etc. Toyotas excel at things
"you don't see" where as Peugeot excels at things you do.
Toyotas suppliers are second to none. Yamaha for cylinder heads, N-D
for electrical, Nok for seals, etc. Their transmissions are
bulletproof. Toyota also did not follow Honda's very thin sheet metal
specs. So I've never experienced significant rust.
Peugeot mechanicals are "good enough", but not world class.
If I were to say... Peugeot could learn more from Toyota than Toyota
from Peugeot. That being said, the Peugeot's I'm familiar with are 80%
cars and the Toyotas are 85%. Both close enough and both closing in on
virtual perfection. However I'm 10 years out on Peugeot technology and
a couple out on Toyotas. Perhaps the new Peugeots are much better than
old ones - which weren't that bad.
