I know we've passed this subject, I thought I might add a thought.
Having owned both the Citroen DS (4 of'm) and the SM (only one) the DS
is the way to go if you don't want the Maserati V6 high maintenance
potential nightmare. There is no such thing as a cheap SM. However,
I LOVED that car! The SM is a space ship that is one of the most
amazing vehicles made. Although nose heavy, excellent tires make it
surprisingly crisp in handling. The steering is one of those love it
or hate it sort of things. It was so amazing technologically that I
had to love it. Two turns lock to lock. Hydraulic connection to
wheels (NO play). Self centering even with car stopped. Speed
sensitive. BTW, I never had maintenance problems with the Citroen
part of the car. Just the V6. (dual ingnition, one set of points,
coil, etc. for each bank of 3 cylinders) and timing chains.

The DS however, I used for daily driving. The 4 cyl. engine is a
sleeved over-built hemi (valve train looks like an XN6) that is
absolutely bulletproof. I'd like to get another one, complete with
the semi-auto (Citromatic) transmission. The Citromatic was a work of
art. It was the same hypoid gearbox used in the manual cars but was
completely operated hydraulicly including clutch. Hydraulic feedback
circuits galore! But you know what? It was rugged and very reliable.
Never had a problem with a citromatic. Advice: don't even think of
touching the adjustments unless you have contacted someone who knows
what they're doing. Anyway, after driving a DS/ID, you get into ANY
new car and the new car makes you feel as though everything in the
steering, suspension and brakes is connected by rubber bands compared
to the D (this cost them some sales back in the day as test drives
turned into driving in a series of lurches and swerves)!

    Anyway, my severa
