peugeot v. toyota

Hello All,
I've been lurking for a week, this is my first post. I am presently
trying to sell a Cadillac so that I can buy my first Peugeot...not
counting the bicycle I had in Germany 20 years ago.
So, I know very little about Peugeot's and I'm here to soak up the
knowledge. I thought I'd contribute to the P. v. T. discussion,
because as a "non-Peugeot owner" I, of course, have the impression
that T.'s are basically the Maytags of automobiledom and French cars
are not at the top of the list for cars that don't break. I'm excited
to learn that among people who actually drive them, there is a lively
debate as to which is the more durable car! I hope I might come to
believe that a 20 year old Peugeot is comparable to a 20 year old
Toyota in this regard by my own personal experience. Hope springs
eternal!
Someone mentioned hard daily use as the yardstick to use here, and
I thought I'd mention how my impression of Toyota's formed 15 years
ago. My cousin married a girl with I think it was an 84 Corolla.
Of course, in due time she ended up with a new car and he was stuck
driving the old Corolla back and forth to work. Well, he didn't like
that car one bit, so he decided to accelerate its demise. He wrung
that thing out mercilessly every day to and from work. He had a bit
of a commute, and it was mostly gravel roads, and he liked to get
sideways around the bends, if you get my drift. He never changed the
oil or any of the fluids, and he just was really hard on the poor old
car, actually trying to get it to break. Well, after a full year of
this he changed his mind about the car and came to admire it for
standing up to this abuse with nary a whimper. He went from being
completely prejudiced against "jap piece of crap" cars to buying a
new Toyota pickup truck. And, lo, his brother ended up buying a
new Camry. That family was not swayed by advertising or rebates
or zero percent financing, they were converted by the machinery itself.
Anybody got a story like this about Peugeots?
Of course, I wouldn't drive a Toyota precisely because so many people
think so highly of them. I agree with the guy who said there are so
many on the road they are the ultimate boring car. But, I choose
other makes with the full-knowledge that, dollar for dollar, I am
probably going to get less reliable transportation than I would from
a boring Toyota. Reliability is not my priority. I like quirky cars
like Saabs and I accept the compromises.
