Hahaha, funny you would ask... Look through the archives and you'll
find many a story from me about how I beat the hell out of my old 1984
Peugeot... It was ragged from day one when I inherited it, seldom saw
an oil change, and I did things to it that I would never dream of
doing now--both in terms of how I drove it and what I did to it
mechanically. It was even hydrolocked twice by ingesting water during
floods. Heh, oops.
At 271,000 miles, with absolutely no internal engine work, the motor
produced exactly 165psi on each cylinder during a compression
test--and not a drop of oil made it into the combustion chambers. It
also idled incredibly quiet--no rattle, ticking, etc.
The transmission had never been touched, and its first fluid change
was somewhere around 170k miles. Everything in the suspension, minus
the tie rod ends was original, as were most of the hoses, all of the
wiring, most of the bulbs, etc, etc...
Things did fail--like the alternator, sunroof, speedometer cable,
exhaust system, and whatnot... Funny thing is that the car went for a
while in the middle (over the course of about 100,000-200,000 miles)
where it really didn't demand anything but gasoline and the the
occasional oil change.
