Dunno about the engines (I'm quite the Volvo snob), but Toyota
specifically (and probably most Japanese makers) have fantastic
transmissions. I've got an Aisin Warner 4spd auto unit in my Volvo
(commonly found in RWD Celicas and Toyo trucks). Compared to the ZF
(4HP22) unit that Volvo (and Peugeot, Rover, Saab, BMW, etc) used it's
extremely durable. I'm quite a fan of how well the AW tranny shifts.
I've got roughly 225,000 km on my Japanese tranny. Due to heater core
failure, I'm driving a friend's Volvo with similar mileage (roughly
35,000km more) for the time being.
There was a rumour running around on the Volvo list that you'd have to
run the AW transmissions dry at least three times before they would
crap out on you.
Admittedly I like the Peugeot (ZDJL) and Volvo (B230F) motors quite a
bit compared to their similar aged, similar sized Japanese
counterparts. The Euro motors just make more low end torque and are
geared more appropriately making for a more pleasant driving
experience than the Japanese cars. Plus most of the Euro makers moved
away from frightening computer controlled feedback carb messes in the
80s.. long before many of the Japanese makers did. You haven't seen a
frightening engine until you've seen an 84 Accord.
