A few weeks back I bought a 88 505 GTi which supposedly had a blown trans.
    ZDJL 2.2 l with auto 4HP22 sedan, 195,000 km.

When I talked to the lady before buying it, she said she had missed the trans oil change, and the mechanic had told her it would slowly get worse and stop moving, and that there were no available secondhand trans available. Apparently it did stop, so she was about to wreck it, but fortunately the deal with the wreckers went bad, so she sold it.

Went to pick it up, found the mirrors missing, the stereo removed, back window switches gone and drivers sunvisor missing. Pipe was of the return fuel line in the engine. Mirrors and stereo "turned up" after the owner talked to the garage .....

I towed the car to the workshop, fixed the return fuel hose and started it up, horrible noise from the trans, but it did seem like it might want to move. Drained the trans (it was full) and kept a sample of whatever the stuff in it was. Drove the car around the block, quiet, smooth, nice gear changes. Took it to an auto trans shop for their opinion, they thought the trans seemed fine, and that the oil that came out wasn't burned (also thought it wasn't trans fluid, but more like used oil by the smell, with brake fluid in from the feel of it).
I went back to the workshop and drained the trans again, changed the filter and refilled.
The car has since done 800 km or so with not even the slightest hint that anything is wrong with the trans.

Also, the dodgy mechanic had supposedly changed the front wheel bearings and inspected the car about 500 km earlier.

When I got it, the wheel bearing was so loose that the washer was rubbing on the hub and had filled the outer bearing up with filings. Also the inner and outer bearings were different brands (didn't know you could buy a kit with different brand bearings in it), and the gunk around the inner end of the stub axle hadn't been cleaned off. Wonder who got ripped off? And they charged her $150 for the bearing kit (available from Peugeot dealer for around $60 - 70).

Also the tyre was out of round because of the plys separating, and worn through to the steel in one spot.

Keep away from that mechanic (don't know if he deserves the title)!!!!!! (located central Auckland NZ)

    Kevin
