Japanese v. European

Our son's late model VW Passat never was trouble free, started to crater at 50,000 miles and was a money-sewer at 60,000. He traded for a Honda Accord, 2.4 liter 4 with a five-speed auto trans. He commutes 5 to 6 hours a day, seat was miserable; he swapped for a Mazda V6, wonderful car. He was an auto editor for a national magazine, knows its suspension limitations and great positive qualities.
Every one of our European cars, English, German, Italian & French was a money pit and constant nuisance; the first VW Cabriolet the only really reliable one; my Peugeot 604 was wonderful to drive but a pain to maintain. Every one of our Japanese cars, Nissan, previous Mazdas, Geo Prism (aka Toyota Corolla), my wife's new Honda Accord are reliable to a degree beyond European norms. My Ford Taurus seems to be OK at 34,000 miles.
Three years from now, about 2007 or 2008, Toyota will be numero uno, will have earned it.
My feelings about GM are based on experience. If PSA gets together with another auto company, I hope it is not GM.
