my 505 with LSD was SUPERIOR in the snow and on very slippery roads. our volvos with Locking differential are similarly good, but not as.
only one wheel breaks loose in rwd cars with open diff, yes, but when that happens on snow/slush/ice, the car goes sideways.
in fwd, even on ice, one wheel breaking loose remains a loose wheel problem, and doesnt become a loose vehicle problem.
when volvo began selling FWD in north america, they helped to educate the sales force (e.g., us) on theory and practical driving of fwd vs rwd...info, text, diagrams, pictures, videos...AND experiencing the limits (and beyond) on the road. :)
This is also true of regular RWD cars - only one wheel breaks loose
and the car stays reasonably in control; the issue with many 505s is
the the LSD - better traction under most conditions, but when the
rear goes it goes big time. This is true of any RWD car with LSD.
> great thing about a regular FWD set up (maybe the only great
thing :) is that when wheels spin out of control, the car does not
go out of control. the one wheel just breaks free.
