sounds a lot like a problem I had with my current car (non-peugeot)
recently. Started off as an occasional jerk/lurch when under load. But after
a few weeks it was so bad I thought something was trying to seize. Whenever
I was accelerating it was thumping, jerking, crackling, you name it! It
turned out it was just due to a failing/cracked HT lead connection. I
changed all the leads, and the spark plugs etc, and now the car runs smooth
as anything.
It might be worth a check before you condemn the transmission.

Today I experienced what I think is a problem with the 4 HP 22 transmission
in my '91 Wagon. Perhaps somebody has experienced this too. I was driving
about 65 mph and when I tried to accelerate I started to experience some
chatter
and jerking of the car. After I got off the expressway and drove home it
would also happen at lower speeds, particularly when I tried to accelerate
or go
uphill. I'm pretty sure it isn't the engine, since it runs pretty good and
I
have no problem at idle.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem, or suggestions about where to get
another good 4 HP transmission would be appreciated.
