When I bought the MI almost three years and 50,000 km ago I had the
belt replaced along with a few other items. The mechanic removed the
motor as I also wanted the clutch replaced as well as the steering
rack which was leaking. There is now an odd noise coming from this
general area so I went to investigate. I took off the top Timing
belt cover (clever attachment device) and had a look. It seemed to
be fine with no undue wear and seemed to be at a reasonable tension.
I dont' know if the mechanic had a tensioning tool but I doubt it.
My questions are: Aside from visual inspection is there anything else
that I should look for? Also, How on earth would someone be able to
install and tension the belt while it is in the car. There wasn't
enough room to even have a good look at the belt. The tensioning
    tool must be pretty tiny.
Also, my father in law from Argentina removed and cleaned the right
side CV joint (la homocimetrica or something like that)and replaced
the boot as it was broken. Now I have noticed that there is grease
being forced out of the boot at the end and I get a strange noise
when I turn the car slowly to the right near the full extension. My
thought was the CV joint but when I raised the car and rotated the
wheel I don't get any noise. It seems very smooth. What could the
noise be. It is not a grinding noise but a, don't laugh,
gunk..gunk..gunk noise. When I took the wheel off I couldn't see
    anything out of the ordinary.
    Any ideas?
