fuel system misery

My family has owned our 91' Peugeot 405 since it was brand new. Last
year my mother finally decided to replace it with a Saab, and I
inherited it. I really love driving the car, but its put me through
waaay too much misery. I can't believe the money the folks have
dumped into it. So now it has broken down once again. I'm home for
Christmas from college, and the last thing I want to do is put more
$$$/effort into fixing it. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable
about these beautiful but fragile cars can help me out. So here's the
problem:
Car has been sitting for three months or so. Charged battery, fired
it up. Tank is nearly empty. Drive to gas station no problem, put in
5 gals. Start heading toward downtown. As soon as I accelerate to 40
mph "check engine" light comes on, engine stalls and regains power on
one second intervals or so. Then it dies for a few seconds and I pull
over to the side of the road. Car will start, but dies quickly.
After a few more starts it dies within 2 seconds of starting, and is
not driveable.
This really sounds like a fuel system problem to me. Where is the
fuel filter located, and how is it accessed? (I drove this thing to
Mexico a few years ago and I'm sure its had plenty of filthy gas) Are
the pressure regulators in these things bad? And where is the fuel
pump relay so I can test the pump? Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks fer yer help, it is most appreciated.
