Nick,
I don't have the technical expertise to give you "the answer." But I do have
an 85 505 wagon that gave the previous owner fits in the fuel supply
department. He destroyed more than he improved trying to find the problem. I
got it for a song (and a prayer), repaired what he had broken, then settled
in to figure out its headache. One day, driving along the shore, it coughed
and quit. It started right up again, then started coughing again. In a mad
frenzy, I started disconnecting and reconnecting things hoping for magic.
Voila! With the O2 sensor disconnected it was a smooth ride home. I could
not get the O2 sensor out of its socket, so I left it disconnected for a few
months. Car started and ran fine. Then one day, I had to replace the whole
section of pipe with the sensor mounted in it. Not a challenge, as I have a
supply of these things in the yard (and no chance of a new girlfriend). The
replacement pipe had a sensor in it. Worrying a bit, I hooked it up. Car
still runs with no problem in the fuel supply area! I think it runs better
with than without the O2 sensor, but that may be because I put so much blood
and sweat into getting it to run!
